Music and Lyrics by Queen
HELLO AND WELCOME…
After the success of “Rock Of Ages” last year we are thrilled to be able to bring “We Will Rock You” to Ruislip once again.
The musicians we are celebrating tonight don’t really need an introduction. Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor over the past five decades have written themselves into, not just rock history, but music history itself. Queen’s “Who Wants To Live Forever” was the first 7” single I ever brought in 1986, I was 8 years old and my obsession with Queen began. My Dad was a massive fan too and listening to the new Queen album was a big thing. The legendary guitar riffs, the harmonies, the incredible Freddie Mercury vocals (in my opinion the greatest voice there has ever been), this band had, and has, everything. Even today they are still touring with the incredible Adam Lambert (the second best voice there has ever been!) very different from Freddie and not trying to be him, but celebrating their music in an incredible way.
We Will Rock You tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought and fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same. The original west production opened in 2002, and despite being panned by critics, it has become an audience favourite, and became one of the longest-running musicals in the west end. It closed in 2014, and since, has gone on many tours and returned to the west end occasionally. By December 2022 the musical had been seen by 20 million people across 28 countries.
In 2006 (whilst the west end production was still playing) Schools Will Rock You offered a special licence to youth groups. Starlight was one of the first to be awarded one of these and so Starlight Youth was born. We Will Rock You was our very first production in Ruislip and we have never looked back. To repeat this show in the same venue 20 years later is extremely special.
The cast have really reacted well to this show and I couldn’t be more proud of each and everyone one of them. This is not an easy show to produce, as you will see by how hard the cast work on stage. Tonight is the result of blood, sweat and tears and just 18 rehearsals which is crazy considering the kind of show it is. I’d like to thank the cast for grabbing this show with both hands (and feet) and giving it all they have. I honestly believe that the Starlight experience is very special, we are a team and we support each other on and off stage. We only rehearse once a week to allow for a life outside of the group.
As always, Starlight wouldn’t be complete without our tech team and stage crew, who areall vital to the production and I thank them for all their hard work.
Special mention has to be given to Katie, Tim, Dan, Peter and Peter who are integral to Starlight’s longevity.
After “We Will Rock You” we will be taking a much needed breather over the summer, but will return in September to begin rehearsals for our new “Numbers” concert. This will feature songs and routines from the word of musical theatre, using numbers as a theme. Including songs from Six, 42nd Street, 5 Guys Named Moe , 13 and many more. The concert will take place in November and promises to be great fun to rehearse and perform.
With then “Sister Act” being planned for 2027!.
If you’d like to be a part of the group fill out an enquiry form here.
Thank you for coming tonight, I know you’re in for a great show; join in, clap and cheer as much as you like, the cast deserve all the praise they get.
Enjoy the show!
